Why Underground Safety Is Non-Negotiable.
Every year, unmarked underground utilities injure workers, destroy property, and cost companies millions. Knowing what's below the surface before you dig is a critical part of the process — not the whole process, but a part no serious contractor skips.
811 Is a Starting Point — Not the Whole Picture
Most contractors know to call 811 before digging. But 811 only marks public utilities — the lines owned and maintained by utility companies running from the street to the meter. Everything on your side of the meter is invisible to 811.
What 811 Marks
Public utilities only
- Utility company-owned lines from the street
- Mains and transmission infrastructure
- Lines up to the meter or property connection
- Free service, typically 2–3 business days notice
What Finder Locates
Private utilities — the gap 811 leaves
- Electric, gas, and water lines on private property
- Lines from the meter to structures and outbuildings
- Underground conduits, irrigation systems, and tanks
- Broken or dead cables with no active signal
- Depth readings available upon request
The Real Cost of Digging Blind
These aren't hypotheticals. They happen every single day across the country — and good planning and professional locating prevent most of them.
Electric Line Strikes
Potentially FatalUnderground electric lines carry enough voltage to kill instantly. A single strike from a backhoe or even a hand shovel can result in electrocution, severe burns, and explosion. Strikes frequently cause extended power outages that cost businesses and municipalities thousands of dollars per hour.
Gas Line Ruptures
Explosive RiskCutting through a natural gas line creates an immediate explosion and fire hazard. Gas migrates quickly through soil and can accumulate in enclosed spaces — basements, manholes, buildings — before igniting. The resulting explosion and fire can level structures and cause mass casualties.
Water & Sewer Damage
Major Property DamageStriking a pressurized water main can instantly flood an excavation site, undermine foundations, and shut down an entire city block. Sewer line breaches create costly environmental contamination and public health hazards that require expensive remediation and permitting.
Telecom & Fiber Cuts
Costly DowntimeA severed fiber optic cable can knock out phone, internet, and data services for thousands of businesses and households. Repair costs — including emergency contractor rates, service disruption penalties, and regulatory fines — frequently run into six figures.
Safe Digging Is a Shared Process
Professional locating is a critical step in any excavation project. Combined with 811 notification and careful excavation practice, it gives crews the most complete picture of what lies below before any ground is broken.
Call 811
Required by law before any dig. 811 marks public utility lines at no cost. This must happen regardless of whether private locating is also performed.
Arrange private locating
Private lines on your property — everything from the meter inward — aren't marked by 811. This is where Finder comes in: we locate, mark, and document what's there so your crew has complete, accurate information before breaking ground.
Hand-dig within the tolerance zone
Industry best practice is to hand-dig (pothole) within 18–24 inches of any mark before bringing in mechanized equipment. Marks show approximate location — the utility may be slightly offset due to settling, prior disturbances, or signal variation.
Excavate carefully
Follow OSHA requirements and applicable state and local excavation regulations. Even with thorough locating, careful, deliberate digging is the last line of protection.
Who Needs a Private Locate?
If you're breaking ground — whether it's a major excavation or a single post hole — private utility locating is the professional standard. 811 alone is not enough.
General Contractors & Excavators
Any excavation on private commercial or industrial property. Site prep, grading, trenching, and foundation work all benefit from a clear picture of what is below.
Facility & Plant Managers
Industrial sites have dense, decades-old underground infrastructure that is often poorly documented. A locate is an important step before any ground disturbance.
Utility & Telecom Contractors
Installing new lines near existing private infrastructure calls for accurate mapping to reduce the risk of costly and dangerous crossings.
Property Owners & Developers
Before demolition, site development, or landscaping projects — especially on properties with older or undocumented infrastructure.
The Professional Standard
OSHA requires employers to take positive steps to determine the location of underground utilities before excavation begins. "We called 811" is not a defense when a worker is injured striking a private line that 811 never marks.
Finder locates and marks the underground infrastructure on your site, giving your crew documented information before excavation begins. That documentation supports your insurance requirements and keeps the project on track.
